Is it Ok to use an Electric Breast Pump before my baby is born?
Some new to be mothers often ask if it is ok to start using an Electric Breast Pump before their baby is born. To either see if their milk was in, or to start stocking up. To use and Electric Breast Pump or a manual breast pump is not a good idea at all.
Using an Electric Breast Pump causes nipple stimulation and this nipple stimulation can release a hormone called oxytocin. Oxytocin can produce contractions which could produce a premature labor and a premature baby. Never mind how far you are in your pregnancy, bringing on labor through nipple stimulation can bring on very quick and excessive contractions which could harm you and your baby.
One other reason not to use an Electric Breast Pump before your baby is born is because Colostrum will typically come in after the baby is born. This milk is very beneficial to your babies health as it contains important nutrients and antibodies. It also helps the new born with it's first stool as it contains a mild laxative.
